Lyrics

AND THE ROAD GOES ON FOREVER...

And the road goes on forever, you may ask me why
I’m sitting alone here on this frontage road tonight
You may think that the bars are empty, you’d be wrong
Just because the streets are dead and the highway lights are on
All night long, All night long

She told me a story on a Greyhound night
She’d put her dad in a home, he was losing his mind
And he married the girl in the room next door
She was only 94

And they found him one night on the railroad track
Dressed in pink, in his wife’s halter back
and he carried on walking down the end of the line
Cos he couldn’t remember the name of his wife

The bus pulled in it was a quarter to four
I handed my guitar to some hag by the door
She said: “You wanna see what I got in my bag?
“I was young and pretty once, say what about that!”

Well, I couldn’t believe what my eyes could see,
Sure enough she’d been a model back in 1953
And here I am, alone, at the end of my dreams,
And there she is on the cover of a Vogue magazine

And the road goes on forever you may ask me way
I’m sitting alone here on this frontage road tonight
You may think that the bars are empty, but you’d be wrong
Behind those closed door there’s a whole world going on
